The precise choice of setting was in a sense arbitrary. I wanted to do fantasy, because it is what I know and love. Dan wanted to create something dark and edgy. What you are describing in the question is what I think of as ‘steampunk’. Dieselpunk is the darker, dirtier side of steampunk. Think of a continuum between steampunk and cyberpunk. In terms of magic level, technological level, and grit/mood/tone, dieselpunk falls in between the two.
