In character centered universes (or stories) there are usually a couple of standard points of divergence in fanfic for each fandom, mostly employed to ‘fix’ a canon fact that some subgroups of the fandom don’t like. Those fix-its can become stale after a while: what if RayV didn't choose his undercover job, Qui-Gong wasn’t dead, Blair didn’t renounce his dissertation etc.

I don't know that I’ve ever written a proper ‘fix-it.’ I’ve attempted, but never published any of them. I have written plenty of ‘what if bad event in canon wasn’t averted?’ fic. Those are fun. (Or maybe it’s just me). I tend more towards: ‘hey, canon!writer. You left a hole here. I will fix it for you’ though, more than anything.

  • 2018 ‘sheronwrites’ Cap/IM: Fix-It Friday Recs (2018) on Tumblr 13 July page image

If you know me, you know I love Fix-Its. So for the Fix-It Friday theme, first of all, there are two rec-lists I have already done: MCU Stony Post-Civil War Fix-Its / Marvel 616 Stony Post-Civil War Fix-Its / And to those lists I’d also like to add the following stories…. A post-Infinity War Fix-It I loved reading: give me some time, I’m living in twilight by oh_simone (1,938 words) Summary: A spaceship carrying the survivors from Titan lands in Wakanda, and Tony Stark is not on it. Why I love it : This is just a unique premise for a fix it of The Snap that everyone needs to read! Gen with heavy Steve/Tony overtones.

  • 2025 C. Chang Did a TV Show Hurt Your Feelings? ‘Fix-Its’ Offer Justice in N.Y. Times 3 May (electronic ed.) page image

Fans are taking matters into their own hands by writing ‘fix-it fics’, or simply ‘fix-its’, which attempt to right the perceived wrongs of a beloved work—and often provide some measure of emotional succor. [Ibid.] When Mark’s office persona, Mark S., chose his workplace love…over his wife in the Season 2 finale, Zeilo took it up a notch. She wrote not one but two fix-its in which Gemma gets her man.
